Trans director Sam Feder's recent feature "Increased Examination" offers a compelling dual viewpoint – both an emotional profile of a prominent transgender advocate and a sharp analysis of media reporting surrounding transgender rights.

Judicial Struggle at the Supreme Court

This feature follows ACLU attorney Chase Strangio as he prepares for court proceedings in the significant Supreme Court case the Skirmetti case. These proceedings occurred in December 2024, with the judiciary ultimately deciding in favor of Tennessee's case, practically allowing restrictions on healthcare for trans youth to stay in effect across over twenty US states.

We made Heightened Scrutiny in just 16 months, explained Feder during a conversation. Meanwhile, my earlier film Disclosure took me five years, so this was very accelerated. Our intention was to generate conversation so people would understand more about the case.

Personal Story Amid Political Battle

Although Feder offers a thorough examination of how major news organizations have disseminated transphobic rhetoric, the film's most valuable contribution may be its compelling portrayal of Strangio. Usually a reserved attorney in public appearances, Strangio shows his humanity throughout the documentary.

That was a substantial challenge, to share parts of my life to a filmmaker that I had strived to keep personal, explained Strangio. Sam told me he wanted younger people to know that we fought, to see what was done in defense of these battles for our basic existence.

Varied Perspectives in the Movement

To support Strangio's account, Feder features various transgender voices, such as well-known leaders from activism and entertainment. The documentary also presents viewpoints from cisgender advocates who examine how respected publications have contributed to damaging portrayals of trans people.

The viewpoint of transgender youth central to the legal case is illustrated through a remarkable 12-year-old student named Mila. Viewers initially witness her fighting for her fellow students at a educational meeting, with later scenes showing her speaking for transgender rights outside the Supreme Court.

Intimate Moments Beyond the Legal Battle

The documentary also includes poignant moments where Feder transcends the never-ending legal struggle, such as scenes of Strangio vacationing in Italy and getting a tattoo featuring words from activist Pauli Murray's poem "Prediction."

This ink moment is among my most cherished sections in the movie, shared Strangio. Getting inked is nearly like a meditative experience for me, to be completely aware in my body and to consider it as a vessel for things that are important to me.

Body Identity and Portrayal

Feder's dedication to lovingly documenting Strangio adding to his body art emphasizes that this film is primarily about trans bodies – not only those of youth who confront denial of their ability to live truly in their own bodies, but also the bodies of the many participants who appear in the production.

I create films with a message, and part of that is picking people who are outstanding and articulate enough to hold the camera, stated Feder. Whenever people ask me what they should dress for an interview, my response is anything that makes you feel attractive. This is crucial to me – as transgender individuals, we struggle so much with our image.

Impact and Hope

A key aspect that makes Feder's documentaries shine is his evident skill for making his trans participants feel comfortable, seen and valued. This methodology develops genuine chemistry between Feder and Strangio, enabling the director to accomplish his goal of showing Strangio as a whole person and leaving a testament for posterity of how determinedly he and fellow activists have fought for trans rights.

I hope not people to end up in a situation of constant discouragement because of what the law is denying us, explained Strangio. I aim to be in a process of using the law to minimize harm, but not to transform it into some sort of pathway for our liberation possibilities. The government is not going to be the mirror through which we perceive ourselves. Our community are that reflection, and it's very important that we continue having that discussion together with discussions about resisting these policies and procedures.
