Administration Announces Federal Worker Layoffs as Funding Gap Nears Three-Week Mark

The White House disclosed the initiation of federal worker terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

While the official provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services used by the public and vowed to challenge the moves in the legal system.

This is shameful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver critical services to communities nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the news, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved before then.

During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, blasted Senate Democrats for not supporting the Republican bill, which passed in the House on a near party-line vote.

Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and reopen the government,” Johnson stated. Beginning shortly, American service members, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Last week, unions sought a court injunction to prevent the government from implementing any layoffs during the shutdown. Additionally, a court official ordered the administration to provide specifics on termination strategies, affected agencies, and whether any government staff had been recalled to execute layoffs.

An analysis contended that a funding lapse restricts the ability of the government to conduct terminations, referencing official advice that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated prior to the funding expired.

Impact on Workers

The layoffs occurred on the same day that government employees received only a incomplete payment for the final days of September but excluding the start of October, since funding lapsed at the start of the period.

Max Stier, the president of the advocacy group, criticized the gridlock’s impact on federal employees.

This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the administration have not succeeded to keep our federal operations running,” the advocate said. The air traffic controllers, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are continuing to be paid amid the funding gap.
